Principal's Message
Being a Champion in the classroom is our mantra here at Harlan Community Elementary School (HCES). Teachers and students alike, work very hard to make the elementary School a top-notch learning community and put students achievement at the top of our priority list. Being a Cyclone Champion includes having high expectations for student’s social and emotional wellbeing. Students are taught how to be a productive community member, the importance of grit, and how to be a respectful person to all.
Specifically, HCES has partnered with Iowa State University and Boys Town in order to implement a school-wide approach known as “Well Managed Schools.” Well-Managed Schools introduces students to the key components of the Boys Town Education Model®, a multi-tiered, school-based intervention program that provides all students with the positive behavior support they need to succeed.
Mathematics at HCES is a holistic approached focused on problem solving and number sense. Students will experience critical thinking through the utilization of the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum. Students are expected to know, think and understand about numbers and their relationships to each other.
Literacy, the backbone of all our learning, is embedded in all subject areas and is supported with the Center for Collaborative Classroom curriculum. Students experience deep learning in all five components (phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and reading comprehension) of a comprehensive literacy program.
The Harlan Community School District mission statement is to produce lifelong learners and productive citizens, but at the HCES your child will be transformed into a CHAMPION in everything they do.
Yours in Education,
Jeff Moser
